In World of Warcraft, the val’kyr are winged warrior women who raise fallen warriors from the dead, much like valkyries of Norse mythology. Though originally created by Titan Keeper Odyn to raise an army of worthy warriors to protect Azeroth, the Lich King later found a way to create val’kyr of his own to bolster the legions of the Undead Scourge.

Wrath of the Lich King is the favorite World of Warcraft expansion pack of Redditor BaZukaM. As an avid fan of Norse mythology as well, the Lich King’s val’kyr made the perfect subject for a tattoo. The val’kyr in the tattoo is rendered with immaculate detail, from her feathered wings to her deadly spear. BaZukaM had started the tattoo back before the pandemic, and was only recently able to go back and finish it up.

Amber Robyn was the artist responsible for this exceptional art. Her work spans a wide variety of designs, including plants and animals, detailed cosmic scenes, and fantasy and sci-fi creatures. Some of her other recent work includes a galactic turtle carrying the Orion nebula, Trico from The Last Guardian, and a Lord of the Rings-inspired entwife. Her work can be found at @amberrobyntattoos on Instagram.

Understandably, fans were enthralled by the detailed World of Warcraft tattoo. Showering BaZukaM with compliments, they begged him to share Amber’s social media so they could see her other work. Though initially hesitant to share it for lack of wanting to sound like an advertisement, BaZukaM humbly shared her other work so she could get the recognition she deserved.

Despite their popularity, the Lich King’s val’kyr are not likely to be featured in future World of Warcraft stories. After the Lich King’s defeat, many of his val’kyr went on to serve Sylvanas–and the Jailer by proxy. Unfortunately, the few who remained were pressed into the service of the unpopular Shadowlands villain, and were all destroyed during the Sanctum of Domination raid in Shadowlands Patch 9.1. While the val’kyr sworn to Odyn still live, the beloved antagonists from Wrath of the Lich King now must live on in the hearts of their fans, old leveling content, and immortalized in ink.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is available on PC. Eternity’s End is currently in development.
