In a post made on the official World of Warcraft forums, Blizzard community manager Kaivax confirmed that the server cap would be substantially increased. “We expect this to result in smaller queues for  realms that have large queues, and some realms should no longer have queues at all.” These changes were made to World of Warcraft Classic servers via hotfix and have already gone live across all servers.

The heart of the issue for World of Warcraft Classic is that all servers for the game are routinely full. That means that even if a player grows frustrated with the queue times on a high population server, they don’t have an option for a low population server to switch to without queue times. In the past, Blizzard has taken these opportunities to open new servers, but history shows that these servers are often quickly abandoned and result in server merges. Blizzard appears to be trying to keep the number of Classic servers contained to keep the MMO’s population centralized.

Kaivax’s final message is that Blizzard will be monitoring stability and server performance following the change. And sadly, that’s very necessary. High-population servers following the change had significant issues with lag in certain zones, to the point of it being difficult for players to actually play. Blizzard is also doing a full realm reset due to new issues with the queue system. The restart should only take about 15 minutes, so players won’t have to wait too long.

In the end, Blizzard seems to be making the correct choices for the health and longevity of World of Warcraft Classic. The queue times so far have been awful and addressing those was definitely a priority, but making new servers was a bad choice. Increasing server population comes with its own issues. One, servers are struggling, and two, players have to compete with each other for mob spawns and similar overpopulation struggles. Luckily, all of these issues will only get better with time, whereas adding new servers can lead to lasting issues.

In the meantime, World of Warcraft Classic players can pretend they’re having an authentic World of Warcraft in 2004 launch experience. In that regard, Classic’s launch has been near perfect in comparison.

World of Warcraft Classic is available now on PC.
